Pests and pest control 

A pest is an organism that harms man or his property, or is likely to do so. 

It is clear that control of various harmful pests and diseases is essential for the future of agriculture, the industry and human health. Pest control and pesticides thus become indispensable in feeding, clothing and protecting the world’s population. 

Many kinds of animal and human diseases are caused by organisms carried by insects and certain rodents.

 A few facts on habits and behaviour of cockroaches, rats & mice...

Cockroaches

bullet Cockroaches are common in commercial premises associated with the production and storage of food products. Infestations may be introduced into buildings as egg capsules or adults are brought into the buildings with packages.
bullet Cockroaches can survive on water for a month. Their diet includes fermenting substances, hair, leather, paper, faeces and human food. They are carriers of diseases dysentery, gastroenteritis, typhoid and poliomyelitis. They also carry bacteria from sewers.

 

Rodents

Rats knaw at anything to keep their incisor teeth short enough to use.

Rats can swim through the water seals in toilets as well as floor drains.

The average adult rat can consume 30g of dry food and up to 42 mg of water per day.

Rats will even nest between floors and in double walls.

Rats are also carries of disease such as murine typhus fever, bubonic plague, ratbite fever and salmonellosis.
